Resident Employee

If you have ever visited our YA section of the Genovia Library you would know that we have a very special employee but if you haven't, his name is Cinnamon. What makes Cinnamon so special?

...Cinnamon is our resident kitten!

Cinnamon just lounging around

We have had him since he was a baby and have watched him grow to become his 7 month old self. He belongs to one of the employees in our section and when she is working he stays with us. After work he goes home with her because we don't want to leave him alone.

In order to combat allergies we keep him in our YA room, vacuum often and have warning signs but we don't really worry too much about that because he is a really nice kitten. He loves being cuddled, receiving treats, stealing our office supplies (especially batteries) and sleeping. He is usually very happy but definitely not when he has to visit the vet but that doesn't happen especially often.

Below are some testimonials and pictures so that even if you never meet Cinnamon you'll still get to know one of our favorite young adult employees:

"Cinnamon is a wise decision to have in the library. His passion is historical literature." - says Josh
After the vet, see his happy face?
"Yeah, Cinnamon is good in the library, he's a people person." - says Steve
And here is Cinnamon when he was younger
"My children love being able to visit with him. We're not allowed pets in the place we are renting." - says Sandra, a mother of a teenager
Although Cinnamon loves historical literature he also recommends this (it's going to be a movie soon!)

Now that you have all met Cinnamon we hope that you can one day meet him in person, he certainly loves all of the attention. And because of this subject matter we thought that today we should recommend an animal related story that one of us is currently reading.

Today's current read: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare which is the first book in the Mortal Instruments series and also features a cat named Church (Link to more information - Goodreads)

The Best Show That You Are Not Watching

Like a previous post this is going to be written in first person and will share only my opinion (who? the library technician named Alex who runs this blog). Disclaimer: This post does not reflect the opinions of the Genovia Library or of the YA section, it just reflects the opinion of myself.

My Fringe collection - first three seasons
and a T- shirt
(Click picture to enlarge)
So I have just finished watching an episode of Fringe, which is the best show I have ever seen! I started to watch it when it first aired in 2008 but for some reason I stopped watching. I picked it up again in 2010 and since then I can't believe that I ever stopped. For those who don't know anything about it, it is a science fiction show which focuses on Olivia, who is an FBI agent. She finds out that fringe science (transportation, turning invisible, etc.) actually exists and begins to investigate cases that are abnormal for the FBI. Of course there are more characters such as Peter and Walter Bishop who have high IQs and help Olivia solve cases where the unexplainable happens. This show is filled with action, family, fringe science, a lot of questions with some answers and a whole lot of heart. This show has made me cry and made me frustrated with cliffhangers but always feels worth it in the end because although it can be frustrating it shows an unconventional family, love and makes you think.

[This is a good fan-made starter video to see what the show is all about
--- Please note that there may be spoilers from seasons 1-2]

[One of my favorite fan made Fringe videos
--- please note that there will be spoilers for seasons 1-3]

But why am I telling you about this? The thing is, even though this show is so amazing, there are not enough viewers and I am worried about not getting a season 5. So, if you are interested in this show's premise I just wanted to point out that you can borrow seasons 1 - 3 from the Genovia Library. [You can also borrow many other television shows if you were not aware of this]. I should point out though that Fringe is rated PG14 in Canada so you might want to take that into consideration. Even if this just interests one person I will be happy and I hope that if you do start it, you will love it as much as I do!

Today's current read: Virals by Kathy Reichs which is the first book in the Virals series and also features some science in the storyline (Link to more information - Goodreads)

Author Spotlight: Meg Cabot

Today, I (meaning Alex, the library technician who is running this blog) am going to talk about one of my favorite young adult authors. Because I am writing this in first person and it will feature some of my opinions there needs to be a disclaimer. So the disclaimer is that this post does not reflect the opinions of the Genovia Library or of the YA section, it just reflects the opinion of myself.

Meg's Bio photo from her website
So why is Meg Cabot one of my favorite young adult authors? I found her writing around grade 7 and although I read her after the Harry Potter series and A Series of Unfortunate Events, her books were the ones that helped get me through grade 7, 8 and high school. Although my school life wasn't necessarily bad I did move around a lot and was always switching schools meaning that I had to depend a bit on my possessions. Conclusion: I read Meg Cabot a lot!

Meg has written many books, to date I own 57 of her novels including her adult titles. I can't exactly pinpoint what makes them so special to me but whenever I start to read one it just gives a feeling of coming home. The first book I read of hers was The Princess Diaries which is the series that she is most known for. It is set up in diary form and has the main character named Mia write about her life. Mia was and is always a very relate-able character. In the books she wanted bigger boobs, she was worried about flunking algebra and parts of her family were crazy. When I was younger it just helped to know someone else had my issues and even though she is a fictional character, the fact that she could make it through her life with her humour and her personality gave me hope. It still gives me hope.

My complete collection
{YA and adult}

One of my goals in life is to one day meet Meg Cabot. I honestly don't know what I will say to her or whether I will even be able to say anything to her, I can be really shy. I think maybe I will thank her at least, I feel like I owe her that much. I've done an author report on her and she helped me get a good grade, she wrote words on a page that became real to me and she herself seems like an amazing person. Hence if I were to recommend only one young adult author throughout my whole life, I would tell you Meg Cabot and I would never regret it.

Where do you find even more information on Meg Cabot?
Her main website: http://www.megcabot.com/

She also has various social media tools such as:

And as for the character named Mia from The Princess Diaries, she also is on the web:
She has her own website at: http://www.miathermopolis.com/
As well as her own twitter account at: https://twitter.com/#%21/PrincessMiaT

And to close this off I and the library would like to extend to you the chance to write your own author spotlight. Again like the shelves spotlight this can be anonymous and it certainly doesn't have to be as personal as my entry. For this there is no deadline on when to get it in by and we have no clue whether this will be a monthly update but we'll see. If you don't want to write a whole author spotlight we would love some comments to this post or maybe even an email discussing your favorite authors. Recommending books and authors is always a good thing, this way we can find even more books to buy that you'll enjoy!

Today's current read: Abandon by Meg Cabot which is her newest young adult book and the start of a trilogy (Link to more information - Goodreads)

The Test of the Holds Button

At the library we always try to have the best new young adult releases in stock and in order to do that we pre-order many books. Our upcoming releases for the YA section of the Genovia Library is what we think defines amazing. We really do think that you are going to enjoy them and because of that, we thought we could share some of the ones that even we got our eyes on. And remember the fastest one to put a hold on a book is the first one to get it! (You may even beat us!)

[Note: This entry is separated by categories, has quotes from popular young adult authors and also needs a warning (this is important): if a book is not listed as the first in the series there may be spoilers in the blurb about the books before it.]

So this city girl heads to the tiny frontier town of West Glory to help her young widowed aunt keep her homestead going. When another Baltimorean shows up in West Glory, Zora couldn’t be more surprised. Theo de la Croix made the long trip out west hoping to court Zora, whom he has long admired from afar.

But Zora has developed an attraction to a rather less respectable fellow: Emerson Birch, a rough-mannered young “sooner” whose fertile land is coveted.

As Zora begins to suspect that there may be more than luck behind Emerson’s good land, she discovers an extraordinary, astonishing power of her own: the ability to sense water under the parched earth. When her aunt hires her out as a “springsweet” to advise other settlers where to dig their wells, Zora feels the burden of holding the key to something so essential to survival in this unforgiving land. Even more, she finds herself longing for love the way the prairie thirsts for water. Maybe, in the wildness of the territories, Zora can finally move beyond simply surviving and start living." - Saundra Mitchell's website

Olivia's Shelves

Hello blog readers! Today's blogpost is going to be a little different because we are going to highlight a blog reader's shelves. This goes along with the last post where we were asking for submissions. We ended up with a couple of them so we decided to draw out of a hat. If you sent in a submission or still want to submit pictures of your shelves we will still display yours, just at a later date. Because of  the feedback we decided to make this a monthly routine so you can expect to see another submission next month!

So for this month's submission - Olivia:

Hey everyone, I'm Olivia and I'm in high school. I love to read although it is not something I tell everyone. I have shelves in my bedroom so friends end up seeing them but like for the most part only they and my family know. [My parents say that they aren't going to buy anymore of them though until I read them all :( ] Anyways, I collect YA books and some other books but today I will just show my YA books. I also thought that I would show my TV shows as well!

So out of those my favs. would have to be the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (which I liked before it was cool, Edward is mine!) and any book by Meg Cabot. :D

My favs. out of my DVDs would have to be Veronica Mars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hope that you enjoyed my pictures!

Thank you so much Olivia and to all of the people who have submitted. I hope that you enjoyed it, we certainly love to see so many good books. So far this is the only monthly post we have planned but if any blog readers have any suggestions we would love to hear them in the comments or in email. And to finish this post off, we have a book recommendation and a hint at what is to come next which is --- new books!
Today's current read: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan which is the first book in the Percy Jackson series (Link to more information - Goodreads)
